Our Cornish Holiday 2017
The first of the Cotswold Food Blog’s weddings went off without a hitch, and as a mini moon myself and Kerry headed down to Cornwall for the week to relax after 18 months of planning. Staying in Wadebridge, and mostly ate for the week at some fantastic places across the county. Here’s a quick summary of the best.
Rick Stein’s Seafood | Padstow
One of our parents had treated us to lunch at one of Rick Stein’s restaurants in Padstow (there are 6 to choose from) which is minutes down the road from our base in Wadebridge. There was a friendly welcome from the team as we both opted for a stir-fried salt & pepper squid starter, followed by Cornish rump of lamb. Both were absolutely fantastic, and the staff presented us with a ‘Happy Honeymoon’ plate with chocolate treats at the end. Kerry recommends Rick’s Spanish White to accompany.

The Shed Cafe and Brunch Bar | Wadebridge
Highly rated on TripAdvisor; The Shed is as big as the name suggests, but wouldn’t feel out of place in the centre of London with it’s cool interior and selection of morning dishes. I opted for a sausage ciabatta, and Kerry the granola. Both choices boasted high quality ingredients, and presented extremely well; despite the kitchen being the size of a cupboard.

Inkie’s Smokehouse | Golitha Falls, Bodmin
Being a general fan of BBQ, we had to seek-out what Cornwall had to offer. We’d previously visited Hub in St. Ives (great food, great views) and TripAdvisor recommended Inkie’s.
Firmly off the beaten track (and hindered by a massive trench of roadworks in Bodmin), we finally got to Inkie’s on our way back to Cheltenham. Winners of various street food awards, the guys had previously smoked and served meat from a horse box, and were in the process of converting a shed in to a permanent restaurant. BBQ passion runs high, as different woods were used to smoke various meats for maximum taste. The result was some of the best BBQ we’ve tasted – in the UK and stateside! Great value as well.

Although not food-orientated, we’d give a special mention to St. Austell Brewery Tour. This was a friendly, well run and great value tour of the actual brewery. You get the opportunity to taste the full range (which for us included ale brewed for the royal wedding in 1981) and entry includes vouchers which can be used to drink on-site, or to take away bottles from the store.
Another special mention goes to Encounter Cornwall, which offers canoe and kayak trips around the stunning town of Fowey. David the owner was a fantastic guide, and this was a brilliant way to spend 3 hours seeing the town and it’s wildlife from a completely different perspective.
Cornwall is such a fantastic place, where nothing is too far away – you can be in a coastal town or the inspiring Project Eden in less than 30 minutes. There is so much to see and experience; and we know we’ll be back many times in years to come.
Anyway – for now, this is the married couple signing off.
