Eat Street – now defunct

As we only posted this review very recently, we decided to leave it up for a few more weeks. Eat Street closed in August 2019 due to ‘cash flow issues’ – Eat Street opened in May 2019 as a burger and street food venue, serving some dishes of global origin. It popped up in Cheltenham in the vacant restaurant left behind by Holee Cow (a much loved local burger joint that relocated to another part of the town).

From the outside, the restaurant could easily be overlooked – the fabric signage looked temporary (perhaps we know why now) and there was a lack of ‘stage presence’ shall we call it. Also, inside it was dark and dimly lit, making it appear closed until you got close up, and the basic posters stuck to the window didn’t add to the appeal for us. The interior is still Holee Cow’s, and granted, they added very jazzy seating, but we felt more internal brand work was required. We really love their colourful Eat Street logo though and thought they had something good going with that.

However, despite all we mentioned above, this visit turned out to be a big dining surprise! What grabbed our attention were the photos of the food popping up on Insta. The food didn’t appear to reflect the look of the restaurant at all. Yes its photos of burgers, but hello colourful, melty, drippy burgers all over our Insta feed of food!

What was on the menu?

As it was impossible to find the menu online (even before it closed), we’ll share it here…

As you can see it wasn’t a complex menu – burgers on the left and on the right Koftas, Tacos and Sides.

How did Eat Street stack up?

Well, the cheapest burger at Eat Street cost £9, rising to £14 for the double patty behemoth, ‘The Tower’. At the time of writing this you could order a burger with dip, fries and a drink included for just the cost of the burger – a pretty stunning deal.

The competition for good burgers is fierce and the game is high in Cheltenham. Lets see how they stacked up against a few competitors:

Eating at Eat Street could save you an impressive £4 a meal, but is it worth it? At that price, definitely, but if they began competing at the same price as Holee Cow and BOS, then we felt they would struggle. Any not because the food isn’t good, but because those places have the full package, atmosphere, a clear identity, a strong local following and the rest.

The temporary feel at Eat Street put us on edge a little, but that meant we were a little unsure what we were actually buying into, what were we part of? Why should we care? It’s not obvious at all, as there was no website, no branding inside the restaurant, no cutlery or condiments out on the glass tables, no internal signage… nout!

On the menu

Helen ordered the Chicken Burger with fries for £9. The fries were pretty standard but the burger had a lot going for it!

Adam and Mike had the Beef Burger and which was super succulent with juice dripping down their faces. The amount of salad packed in there was impressive and tasted fresh and crunchy. The buns were toasted either side which we like!

Kofta Plate

Kerry had the Kofta Plate to see if the other dishes were worth exploring over the burgers and she was very presently surprised. The Kofta meat was succulent and she certainly had a big enough portion! The presentation was excellent and dish came covered in a homemade glorious, cool yogurt dressing and also a serving of garlic mayo on the side, warm servings of flat bread (6 pieces).
